Aveku Peoples

Aveku
A race that dwells on the outskirts of a harsh rocky mountainous landscape, their demeanor and culture reflect their brutal environment. They are about the same height as humans, but their similarities end there. Their legs end in thick cleft hooves made for the rocky hard surface they live on, and their legs instead of having a single joint at the knee, they have two knees, one is normal like a humans, but the other is inverted, giving them a very strange gait when they walk, but allowing them to spring up mountain sides quickly and with ease.
Their bodies are a strange mixture of coarse, short haired fur and long, dark colored feathers. Their feathers are nearly prehensile, they can move them in groups, positioning them in certain ways to better convey certain emotions, flaring them when angry or allowing them to droop when disappointed. When they are happy, they tend to flap and flair their feather groups in unison, as other races are rather terrified by an Aveku smiling, due to their huge, feline like fangs. They can also position their feather to be in a more wide and outward pose, allowing wind to pass through them to create a loud, shrill whistling sound. They use this as long distance communication.
As mentioned before, they have long, brutally sharp feline like fangs. They also have retractable razor sharp claws, much like the big cats that stalk the mountain passes of this world. They also have incredibly keen hearing and smell, much like these cats, making them apex predators in the mountains, though they do herd animals such as goats and mountain species of cattle, hunting is considered a sacred duty to their people.
Their heads are shaped rather much like a cats, rounder and alert, though it does have a rather significant concentration of feathers around it almost like a long mane that they can shift and move. One of their most striking features is their long, oval shaped pupils that split their eyes vertically like a goats. Their eyes also, for some odd reason, do not have a colored portion. It is only the pupil surrounded by the white of their eyes.
Another trait of the Aveku many find odd, especially because of their abundant mammalian traits, is that they lay eggs, large eggs that take a number of months to hatch. They lay clutches of 2-4 eggs and one female can do this twice a year.
Culture
The culture and personality of the Aveku mirror their harsh, inhospitable landscape. They are harsh, most races consider them manner-less and blunt having no time for fake niceties. They have little to no time for the weak, because in their world, the weak perish. They befriend only those who prove themselves worthy of friendship and an Aveku friend, is a friend for life. They take the bonds forged in life experience to be worth for more than the bonds of blood. While they do not befriend the weak, they will still trade and deal with those they deem to be lesser, because they understand that the whole world is not built for hardship like they are, and some races just can't help but be weak. Like humans for example.
When an Aveku egg is laid, it it brought to the center of an Aveku village, a building known as the Aerie, where people charged with the care of these eggs toil over them and make sure they are safe and warm till they hatch 5 to 6 months later. All Aveku meet and know who their parents are, but the parent very rarely have a role in the lives of their children, which is why blood relations are rarely taken seriously. Instead, an Aveku family unit is made up of the six eggs that hatched within the closest period of time regardless of parentage, headed by two of it's members. The strongest, known as the Ave, and the smartest and most cunning, known as the Ku, named after their race to show that all Aveku must strive to be exemplary members of their species. These families are known among Aveku villages simply as Brethren.
Aveku marriage is based upon a few specific things, trust, strength, and of course like other races, love. The emotions of the Aveku people run deeply in their race, though they do their best to think on their feet because letting yourself get swept away in your emotional thoughts could lead to unfavorable situations in an environment that could kill you. So love is usually quantified, the strong very rarely fall for the weak, and the weak rarely even make attempts for the strong.
The ceremonies for Aveku marriages are rather simple. You and your chosen partner go to the tribal priest or priestess and tell them you are getting married. You undergo a very short blessing, the people of the village are gathered and informed, and then you and your partner must complete The Journey of Blessings. The journey consists of a week long stay in the mountains away from the tribe where you and your partner must survive without the tribe, then when you come back, you are officially married and may live together. Marriage changes very little in Aveku life, it is mostly used as a symbol of one's love and admiration for their partner.
The Aveku see sexual relations in a very different light than most humanoid races. While having sex for pleasure is completely acceptable and normal, sex and love are not associated with one another in nearly the same way. While you will have sex with someone you love, chances are you will not be exclusive to this one partner. Sex is also for procreation, not just fun, and that's how they view it. Logically and bluntly like most things in their world. So if your partner can not have children, you are expected to mate with another to further the species.
The Aveku personally think same sex marriages are perfectly fine, but the Aveku in this unions know that they are required to produce offspring with a suitable mate at least twice in their lives, furthering the species is an incredibly important part of Aveku society and sexual orientation does not exempt you from it. Couples that involve more than two Aveku are also fine but if it is one male and multiple females, the females are encourage but not made to breed with various other males as well to spread more genes, if one female and multiple males, the males are encouraged to breed other females for the same reason. If this larger group partnership is between multiple males and multiple females, they are left to their own devices, much like couples between one male and one female.
Gender is considered very different than biological sex and is therefore unimportant to the Aveku, gender plays neither a role in societal position, marriage, or much else besides what pronouns the Aveku uses, if the Aveku uses any pronouns at all. Most races of the time find this concept strange and appalling, specifically humans, but the Aveku do not bother themselves with how other people see their culture. They are satisfied with their ways, and will not change them until they are not.
Every Aveku is watched in their earliest years for certain traits, traits that would lend themselves to certain professions, and once these traits are spotted, each Aveku is pushed into those areas of work, taught and indoctrinated from a young age, to enjoy working these jobs for the good of their people. Even if they don't enjoy them, each Aveku knows that they need to do their best, or they have failed their Brethren, their Tribe, and even their entire species by being less than their best.

New Sky Walkers are picked from the Ave and Ku of the various Brethren family groups within a tribe, by the current Sky Walkers in power. They form a council known among Aveku as simply The Summit. Every ten years, 2 Ave are chosen, and 2 Ku are chosen.
The clergy of the Aveku are those with a connection to the mountains and their magic, or a connection to the divine power that they say come from their gods. All magic users in the Aveku become clergy members, so it is not uncommon to see warrior priests among their ranks.
Hunting is a sacred practice among the Aveku, and even though every member of their species is taught how to hunt, only those who prove to be exemplary hunters are given this as their permanent profession. During hard times, the whole clan is allowed to hunt, but otherwise, only the Hunters can. Hunting is so sacred to the Aveku because before they learned how to herd and domesticate goat and mountain dwelling cattle, hunting is the only way they survived. And even though they don't specifically need to hunt any more, they feel stopping the practice entirely would be a disservice to their ancestors. Also, though they like to keep this fact under wraps, they don't always have enough from the herders to keep their population fed, so the supplementing meat from the hunters is hugely important.
Warriors, of all types, whether they use spears, swords, or bows and arrows, are respected and revered among their people. They give up having a normal life of day to day work for the society to spend their time training, patrolling and fighting to protect their people from the harsh world they live in. Though they are expected to stay home for a time and pass on their genes, they are not expected to marry.

This temple is considered the holiest of places, and only the most pious of Aveku are allowed to go in the pilgrimage to see it. The temple was made by an ancient humanoid race, they know that much because of the pictographs on the walls. Their gods are brutal and harsh, just like them, and just like their mountains. Their gods have compassion for those who do not just ask for it, but for those who prove they deserve it, by working hard and proving their strength.
There are four major gods in this pantheon, one male and three female, all three females are said to be wives of the male, though they are said to also shape shift, meaning these genders are not always correct, thought they are said to prefer these genders highly:
Gozen, The King In The East, The War Lord: The leader of their pantheon and the most powerful of their gods, he is primarily a sun god and a god of justice and war, punishing those who do evil unto their tribe and uplifting those who fight and protect their people.
Raea, The Queen of Mages, Mountain Shaper: Raea is considered to be the physically weakest of the gods, but she is the patron of mages, controlling the flow of magic in the mountains as if it were a stream she could direct. It s said her magic formed the mountain range, lifting it from the plains as the other gods of other races worked elsewhere.
Lilia, The Mother, The Lustful and Desired Queen: She is the goddess of fertility and sex, and though her teachings say that sex is to be enjoyed, it also puts high priority on children and caring for them. Stories of her personality from ancient myths, state she was an insatiable flirt, and would seduce anyone she found attractive enough, regardless of gender. She is said to represent the incedibly emotional undertones of the Aveku.
Jillia, The Huntress, The Herder, The Provider: A goddess of food and all things related to it, unlike most religions with a god like this, she is not shown to be overweight or large, she is in fact rather fit, teaching that food is not to be indulged in and hoarded, it is to be spread amongst the clan so all may partake. And while food may be made so that indulgence is tempting, it is simply something to be overcome.
